I know that htv is typically used to personalize t shirts but of course canvas is a fabric too so i thought i would use the heat transfer properties of htv and the cutting properties of my scan n cut to create a nice piece of art.

I did flip the canvas over and really press and rub from the backside of the canvas.
I do want to mention transfer paper really quick.
The vinyl just didn t want to stick.

While vinyl is usually very easy to apply on most surfaces canvas can be a difficult one.
I prefer to use clear contact paper to transfer my vinyl.

The best part is that heat transfer vinyl is easy to add to a reverse canvas.
That is a cooking spatula to rub down the vinyl and get the letters to stick to my transfer paper.

In my experience htv is way better on canvas than adhesive vinyl.
Now that your canvas is prepped we are ready to stick on the vinyl.
Since you re using heat transfer vinyl it s going to transfer with heat aka your iron or a heat press.
After several months i find that the adhesive vinyl will start to pull away from the canvas.

But you will catch it when you watch it.
Vinyl decals adhere better to smooth surfaces and canvas is rough enough that it can create air pockets and overall be quite hard to get vinyl to stick to.
Check for instructions for the vinyl you are using and make sure all of your settings are spot on.
I had to hold the letters down one by one as i peeled the transfer tape.
But with a canvas there is a little give when you push on it and you want to be able to push firmly.

So if you want a longer lasting canvas project i would use heat transfer vinyl on canvas.

The only exception to this is when you are using glitter vinyl it needs a super sticky transfer paper.
Each type of vinyl has its own recipe that it needs to be applied with.
So when it comes to shopping or gift giving i try my hardest to reduce the amount of paper and plastic we use.
Vinyl can stick to canvas as long as you take your time to prepare and apply it properly.
